🍠 This is the shop that Mao's dad discovered on Threads.

I've been watching Threads lately and I keep seeing people discussing a sweet potato ball.

Some say, "They're gone as soon as they're out of the pot," while others say, "If you go too late, you'll have to wait for the next batch."

Seeing everyone exaggerating how amazing it was, I kept thinking, "Is it really that incredible?"

I happened to be near Xinzhuang High School that day when I suddenly remembered this little shop that had been on my favorites list. Since it was nearby, I decided to go and take a look. The result was quite unexpected.

This sweet potato ball stall, which many people say is "sold out as soon as it comes out of the pot," is actually hidden in a small alley opposite Xinzhuang High School. It doesn't have an eye-catching sign and isn't in a bustling commercial area. If someone hadn't shared it with you, it would be easy to miss it.

Sometimes, the more unassuming a shop is, the more likely it is to hold a pleasant surprise.

👀 What first caught Dad's eye wasn't the sweet potato ball.

I don't know if it's just my habit.

Whenever buying fried food, the first thing Dad looks at isn't the food itself, but the oil.

The frying oil at this restaurant was much cleaner than Dad Mao had imagined.

The oil looked very clear, without the turbidity often seen after repeated frying, and there was no pile of black oil residue. The entire stall was very clean, and the two owners were very efficient in their cooking.

While standing there waiting for my food, I silently gave it a lot of points.

The waiting time wasn't as long as I had imagined. Instead, I watched as each sweet potato ball slowly puffed up, and after being repeatedly flipped and pressed, it finally exploded into a round, golden-yellow shape.

Just looking at that picture makes me look forward to the first bite.

😋 We didn't order the original flavor.

This time I chose three flavors directly.

🥜 Peanuts

Peanut flavor

🍫 Chocolate

Chocolate flavor

🌮 Mexico

Mexican flavor

The peanut aroma is very strong; you can taste the subtle peanut flavor in every bite.

The chocolate is sweet but not cloying, making it perfect for people who like sweet flavors.

As for Mexico...

I originally thought it would have a strong spice flavor, but it turned out to have a light sweetness. Combined with the crispy outside and chewy inside of the sweet potato balls, it was surprisingly easy to eat.

Of the last three packs, the Mexican flavor was the one that Mao's dad finished the fastest.

It seems that Dad has quietly found his number one spot (laughs).

Holding three flavors of sweet potato balls

🎲 Having trouble making decisions? Then leave it to the boss!

There's a flavor on the menu that Mom and Dad think is really interesting.

It's called... "Add whatever you want".

I laughed when I first saw it; it turns out you really can leave decision-making difficulties to your boss.

Nobody knows what flavor we'll get today.

It could be one type, or it could be a mix of two or three types; each pack is like opening a blind box.

Suddenly I realize I should just order this next time.

Anyway, surprises are part of enjoying delicious food.

🌈 What's even more memorable than the sweet potato balls are the two owners.

I later learned during our conversation that the shop was run by two lesbian couples.

The boss was very talkative, and the conversation felt as natural as chatting with a friend, so the waiting time passed quickly.

The other owner was quieter, focusing almost entirely on frying sweet potato balls in the oil. He didn't talk much, but every movement was swift and efficient.

One person was in charge of chatting, and the other was in charge of taking care of the pot.

Watching their interaction, you'll find that they don't need to say much; they already know what the other is going to do next.

That tacit understanding felt natural and comfortable.

It's a scene that Mao's parents still remember even after they passed away.

❤️ Some shops don't need to be famous.

As we left, we kept thinking about it.

If it weren't for the fact that it just happened to slide to Threads.

If it weren't for the fact that I happened to be near Xinzhuang High School.

If I hadn't just happened to walk into this alley...

They probably wouldn't know that such a warm and welcoming little shop was hidden here.

What truly makes people remember the sweet potato balls isn't just their crispy exterior and chewy interior.

It also features clean frying oil, a comfortable and tidy environment, and the tacit understanding between the two owners, one chatting and the other quietly frying sweet potato balls.

After eating it, you won't feel that exaggerated feeling of "this must be the best in Taiwan".

It was actually a very simple thought:

If I come to Xinzhuang again next time, I will probably go down into this alley again to buy a bag of freshly cooked sweet potato balls.

Mao's father felt that this was the most charming aspect of the small shop.
